The Oldest Living Things

I just saw this book that really fascinated me.

The book “The Oldest Things In The World” might be one of the coolest picture books I have ever seen.

Rachel Sussman’s goal is to document, just as the title says, some of the oldest things in the world before they go extinct. It is humbling to look at these ancient species and realize that they have been here for thousands of years before we were even born and will probably still be here long after. Just touching an oak tree that was planted in 1966 had this effect on me.

We as human beings have to realize that even though we are not here for nearly as long as some other organisms on this planet, we still have an effect on things around us. The seemingly infinite time that non-human objects on this planet have really puts into perspective what life is really about.

“We have not inherited this earth from our parents to do with it what we will. We have borrowed it from our children and we must be careful to use it in their interests as well as our own” – Moss Cass
